Hosting and cPanel
Disk space notifications - cPanel and client area
Space warnings can come from cPanel or from the client area. They use different readings, recipients and frequencies: receiving two warnings does not mean you have two different problems.
cPanel warnings
cPanel can warn you when the account or a mailbox is approaching its quota. The usual thresholds in this configuration are 80%, 90% and 98%, labelled as warning, critical and full. The percentage and the service shown in the message are what you should act on; the configuration may vary by server.
Review Preferences > Account Preferences, both the contact address and the enabled notifications. Use an address outside the hosting so you still receive warnings even if the affected account cannot accept more email. Mailboxes can also receive warnings about their own quota.
Client area warnings
For active services with a recent reading, the client area warns you when usage reaches at least 95%. Repeats are limited to one alert per calendar month and require more than 12 days to have passed since the last one.
So do not expect a daily message while the disk stays full. Not receiving a new warning does not mean usage has gone down. The warning is sent to the service's client; check their contact details too.
Multi-account plans
The general alert refers to the plan's total usage. Also check the quotas of the individual accounts: one can run out of space even if there is overall capacity left.
If the plan exceeds 110%, the system provides for a quota reduction warning five days after the usage alert, with a stated deadline of 48 hours. The check depends on the reading and conditions still applying; do not treat that timeline as a guaranteed extra period for exceeding the plan.
If you receive that warning, immediately review which accounts are using space and whether you need to add more. Do not delete suspended or little-used accounts without checking their data and the intention of whoever is responsible for them.
What to do when you receive a warning
- Open Hosting > your service > Space and find what is taking up the disk. On a reseller account, review Capacity and then the affected accounts.
- Check whether the exhausted quota is the hosting's, a mailbox's or an individual account's.
- Free up identified content or increase the space.
- After the next reading, check the new usage and test the operation that was failing.
Running out of quota can prevent you from receiving email, uploading files or writing the application's sessions and data. Not everything fails at once: a cached home page may still be visible even though a form no longer works.
