Change a forgotten email password in cPanel

Reviewed on 2 min read cuentas de correo contrasenas

If you have forgotten a mailbox password, you can replace it with a new one in cPanel. The current password is not shown in the panel. Changing it does not delete any messages or change your client area password.

If you only use the mailbox and do not manage the hosting, ask the person who manages it to make the change. They do not need to share their cPanel access with you.

Set a new password

  1. Open cPanel from the client area.
  2. Go to Email Accounts and find the mailbox's full address.
  3. Click Manage next to that account.
  4. Under Security, enter a unique password or use the generator. Save it in a password manager.
  5. Click Update Email Settings at the bottom of the page and check the confirmation.

Do not delete and recreate the mailbox to change a password: you could lose its messages.

Update your devices

Enter the new password in Outlook, Thunderbird, phones and any application that uses that mailbox to send email. Check both the incoming IMAP or POP settings and the outgoing SMTP settings if the program stores the credentials separately.

Repeated attempts with the old password can trigger a temporary block. Close or pause any clients you have not updated yet.

Check the change

Open webmail and start a new session with the full address and the new password. The automatic login from cPanel does not prove you have typed that password correctly.

Then test sending and receiving from your usual device. If webmail accepts the password and the application does not, check its connection settings, the full username and the SMTP credentials before changing it again.

If you are changing it because of unauthorised access, also review devices, forwarders and account activity with support. Changing the password does not, on its own, remove any malicious configuration set up earlier.
