Transfer a .com, .net, .org or other generic domain

Reviewed on 5 min read transfers generic domains

This guide applies to generic extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info or .biz. The transfer changes the registrar responsible for renewing and managing the domain, but it doesn't move the hosting, doesn't copy the email and doesn't change the DNS automatically.

If you need to compare this process with the one for .es domains, see the general guide to transferring a domain to Hostsuar.

Requirements

Before requesting the transfer, check:

  1. The domain is still registered and isn't in redemptionPeriod, pendingDelete or any other status that prevents a transfer.
  2. Any temporary restriction applied after registration, a previous transfer or certain registrant changes has ended.
  3. The transfer lock is turned off.
  4. You have the most recent Auth-code or EPP code.
  5. You have access to the contact email in case the provider asks for confirmation.
  6. The previous provider will keep the hosting and DNS zone active for the duration of the process.

If the domain is about to expire or has just expired, confirm its status and the available options as soon as possible before starting the request. Expiry alone doesn't necessarily prevent a transfer if the previous periods are paid, but if it enters redemption it must first be restored with the current registrar.

Request the transfer

Go to the domain transfer form, enter the domain and type the Auth-code in the secure field.

Don't send the code in an email or ticket. If the form says it's incorrect, request a new one from the current provider and use the latest one it has generated.

Authorise or speed up the process

The previous provider may send an email to accept or reject the transfer. Approve it if you want to continue.

Some registrars also let you approve or release the transfer manually from their panel. If no action is taken and the provider doesn't reject it, the process can take up to five days to complete.

You'll receive a notification when the domain is active at Hostsuar.

The website keeps using its current DNS

During the transfer, the domain normally keeps its previous nameservers. The website and email should keep working as long as the provider continues to provide those services.

Some providers delete the DNS zone or the hosting when the domain leaves their system. If you are also migrating the hosting, copy and test everything beforehand, and prepare the DNS change with minimal downtime.

Common problems

Incorrect Auth-code

Check that you are using the latest code, without extra spaces, and that it belongs to the right domain. Generating a new one may invalidate the previous one.

Domain locked

Turn off the protection and confirm there's no temporary restriction from the registry. The panel lock and registry restrictions are different conditions.

Transfer pending for several days

Check the contact email and the previous provider's panel in case there's an approval request. If there's no pending action, the process may stay open until its normal timeframe is up.

Expired domain

Don't start the process without confirming its status. See how to recover an expired domain.

After the transfer completes

Check:

  • Configured nameservers.
  • The domain's contact details.
  • Renewal status.
  • Website and email, in case the previous provider withdrew a service.

If you have also moved the hosting, finish with the checks after the migration.

If you also need to change the registrant

Changing the registrar and changing the registrant are different operations. If you change the registrant's name, company or email at your current provider, that provider may lock the transfer for 60 days, unless it offers you the option to opt out of the lock when you make the change. If it is not urgent, transfer the domain first and change the registrant afterwards from Hostsuar: here that change does not add any transfer lock.

Once the transfer is complete, check the expiry date and the cost of the next renewals. If the domain was renewed shortly before the transfer or has a premium price, ask for confirmation of the specific terms before working out the period or the final price yourself.
