Check or restart a domain transfer

Reviewed on 2 min read transfers domains Auth-code

Open Domains and go to the transfer page. The progress shows four stages: Requested, At the registry, Approval and Domain active.

Check the status

Click Check status to query the registry and update the saved information. If the registry doesn't respond, the page keeps the last known status and warns you of the failure.

The check can also detect that the transfer has already finished. In that case it synchronises the domain and completes the remaining activation steps; wait for it to finish before running it again.

Resolve a failed transfer

The page can identify causes such as:

  • incorrect or expired Auth-code;
  • transfer lock or 60-day restriction;
  • transfer rejected;
  • contact pending verification;
  • expired domain.

Fix the cause with the previous registrar first. When Update and restart transfer appears, enter a new Auth-code if asked and confirm only once. Treat the code like a password and don't send it by email or include it in a ticket.

Generic transfers can take up to five days. .es domains usually complete sooner, but they depend on approval by the administrative contact. Don't restart a transfer that is simply still within its normal timeframe.

Before you click restart

Check that the status is a failure and that you have fixed its cause. If it shows At the registry or Approval, first check whether a notification still needs accepting. Don't place a new order to replace a transfer that is still open.

If the provider reports expiry, see the options depending on the domain's status. For a generic domain, past its expiry date and in redemption are not the same.

Once it completes, review DNS, contact, expiry date and renewal. If the website still fails, also check whether the previous provider has removed the zone or the hosting; restarting a transfer that has already finished won't fix that.
