Configure a domain registration or transfer

Reviewed on 2 min read domains registration transfers

The final configuration of a domain depends on whether you are going to register it or transfer it. Either way, check the full name before continuing: once the registry accepts an operation, it may not allow corrections.

Register a domain

  1. Confirm that the domain is still available.
  2. Choose one of the periods available for that extension; the form offers options from one to five years where they apply.
  3. If there is no hosting attached in the cart, select the Hostsuar DNS or enter your own name servers.
  4. Use the account holder's details or add an alternative contact.
  5. Turn on WHOIS privacy if the extension supports it.

Premium domains are not processed from this form. Availability is checked again when you submit the configuration.

Transfer a domain

Whether the registration term is extended depends on the extension and the transfer conditions. Do not assume that every transfer adds a year: check the period and the resulting date for your domain. Enter the Auth-code only in the configuration field when the extension asks for it, choose the registrant and check the WHOIS privacy available.

Before continuing, confirm that the domain is unlocked and active, and that you have access to the registrant's email. Do not share the Auth-code in emails, screenshots or tickets: it authorises the transfer.

Check the cart

Check that the cart contains a single line for the right domain and that the registration or transfer you chose matches what you intended. Also check the period, the attached hosting and the total before confirming payment.

After paying

Check the status of the process and deal with any authorisations required. A registration transfer does not move a website's files or email. If you are also changing hosting, coordinate the migration and the DNS before cancelling the previous service.
