Set up PrestaShop to send email via SMTP

Reviewed on 2 min read SMTP PrestaShop

Set up authenticated SMTP for PrestaShop's order, customer and account recovery emails. You must use an existing sender account and check the full flow; a working SMTP connection does not guarantee that every notification is delivered.

Where to enter the details

Open Advanced Parameters > E-mail (Parámetros avanzados > Dirección de correo electrónico / Correo electrónico), depending on the version, and select the option to use your own SMTP parameters. If you use multistore, check the context before saving.

Mailbox on the same hosting

This example applies when PrestaShop and the mailbox run on the same Hostsuar server:

Field Value
Mail domain name Leave it empty if you do not need a specific value
SMTP server localhost
SMTP username Full mailbox address
Password That mailbox's password
Encryption None, for the local connection
Port 25

The account must exist in cPanel. The shop's sender must be that account or an address authorised to send with it.

External provider or server

Use its exact host, port, encryption and authentication details. A domain registered with Hostsuar does not mean the mailbox is here. Do not copy localhost or an unencrypted connection for a remote server.

Some services require OAuth or another method that the installed version does not support directly. Check compatibility or use a maintained integration; do not lower the mailbox's security to suit an old application.

Sending test and order test

Save and use the test email form. Confirm it arrives and check spam or bounces. Then place a test order and check the expected customer and administrator notifications.

Administrator notifications may depend on Mail Alerts and its recipients. If the general test arrives but a notification does not, check the event, module and email template before changing the connection.

If an error appears

Keep the time and message, without credentials. Tell apart connection, authentication, sender, quota and recipient rejection failures. Check the sending domain's SPF and DKIM and avoid public logs containing order content.
