Default Address in cPanel: what it is and how to set it up
The default address, also known as a catch-all, decides what to do with messages sent to mailboxes that do not exist on your domain.
For example: you have ventas@yourdomain.com, but someone writes to venta@yourdomain.com. You can reject the message and explain the error, or collect it in a mailbox of your choice. This setting does not choose the account you send email from in Outlook or on your phone.
Which option to choose
At Hostsuar we recommend rejecting non-existent addresses with an error message during the SMTP connection. That way the sender can correct a typo and you avoid collecting spam aimed at made-up names.
| You need to… | Suitable option |
|---|---|
| Let people know when they write to an address that does not exist | Reject during SMTP with an error message. |
Also receive a specific address, such as venta@ as well as ventas@ |
Create that mailbox or a specific forwarder. |
| Temporarily collect every name that is not set up | A catch-all, keeping an eye on spam, quota and recipient. |
Set up the recommended rejection
- Sign in to cPanel and look for Default Address under Email.
- Select the domain you want to configure.
- Choose Discard the email while your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message.
- Write a clear notice, for example "This email address does not exist. Please check the recipient."
- Click Change.
The option's name may include "discard", but it tells the sender about the failure. Do not confuse it with Discard (Not Recommended), under the advanced options: that one accepts and deletes the email without any notice, so the sender may think you received it.
If you need a catch-all
Select Forward to Email Address and enter the mailbox that will receive it. It must exist and have space available. Test it before leaving it active and check it regularly.
A catch-all also collects spam aimed at made-up names. Avoid forwarding that traffic to an external provider: it can cause rejections and harm delivery of legitimate email. For a known address, it is usually easier to keep a specific mailbox or forwarder.
Check the result
From an external account, send a test message to a name you know does not exist on your domain. With the recommended option, you should get a non-existent recipient notice; with a catch-all, the message should arrive in the chosen mailbox. Also send another message to a valid account to check normal delivery.
If things do not work as expected, confirm that the domain receives email on this hosting. A change in cPanel does not affect how Microsoft 365 or other providers handle the email they receive. The domain's forwarders can also affect the result.
You can check the exact options in the cPanel documentation on Default Address.
