Create email forwarders in cPanel

Reviewed on 2 min read reenvios

A forwarder sends new messages received at one address on to another. For example, it can direct email for ventas@example.com to a team member's mailbox.

Create a forwarder for an address

  1. Open cPanel > Forwarders and click Add Forwarder.
  2. Enter the part of the source address before the @ and select its domain.
  3. Choose Forward to Email Address and enter the full destination.
  4. Confirm and check the source and destination pair in the list.

Avoid a loop where A forwards to B and B forwards back to A. To change a destination, check the existing forwarder; cPanel may require you to delete it and create it again. Do not confuse deleting the forwarder with deleting the mailbox.

When a copy is kept

If there is an email account with the same source address, the server keeps the message there and forwards a copy. That mailbox still uses quota.

If only the forwarder exists, that does not create a mailbox with a password or IMAP storage. Do not delete an existing account just to stop keeping copies without first saving its history and checking its other uses.

Forwarding does not copy old messages or synchronise read status, folders or deletions. To access the same mailbox from several devices, use IMAP.

Forwarding between domains

A domain forwarder directs an address to its equivalent on the destination domain: ventas@example.com to ventas@example.net. It does not mean sending every address to a single mailbox.

Existing local accounts and autoresponders take priority over the domain forwarder. Check each important address; creating this rule does not move mailboxes or guarantee that the destinations exist.

Check delivery

Test from another account of your own and check the destination, Spam and, if there is one, the local copy. An external receiver may reject forwarded messages because of its authentication or anti-spam policy. Track Delivery helps you tell the route apart from a rejection by the final provider.

If your domain has no hosting, see forwarders from the client area.
