Use + sub-addresses to organise your email

Reviewed on 2 min read filtros de correo cuentas de correo

Plus addressing lets you add a tag after + to a mailbox's address. It is useful for telling apart, for example, messages that come from a form or a subscription without creating a separate account.

If you have an email account usuario@tudominio.com, a sub-address would be usuario+ejemplo@tudominio.com. Messages are delivered to usuario@tudominio.com and can be sorted into a folder called ejemplo when the cPanel option Automatically Create Folders for Plus Addressing is turned on.

For example, you can use usuario+facebook@tudominio.com on a social network to identify those messages. If a folder called facebook already exists, the message can be delivered there even if automatic creation is turned off. That option only controls whether cPanel creates missing folders; if the folder does not exist, use a filter to decide where to deliver the message.

To create a sub-address, add the + symbol followed by a tag to the username. You do not need to create another email account.

Turn on and check sorting

In cPanel > Email Accounts > Manage, check the option to automatically create folders for plus addressing. Send a test from another account of your own to the tagged address and check where it appears in webmail. If the folder exists but does not show in your IMAP application, check its subscription or visibility.

A sub-address uses the same mailbox, password and quota. It does not let you give someone else separate access, nor does it work as a secret identity: anyone who knows the base address can write to it. Some forms do not accept the + sign; in that case you need another address or a forwarder.

If you need more specific conditions, use email filters. Check your existing filters so they do not move or discard the test again.
