Look up a domain's records with Track DNS

Reviewed on 2 min read dns cpanel

Track DNS (Seguimiento DNS in the Spanish interface) lets you look up DNS information from cPanel. It's for checking a domain; it doesn't change its records or track email delivery.

Look up a domain

  1. Log in to cPanel and search for Track DNS.
  2. In Domain Lookup, enter the domain without https://, slashes or paths.
  3. Run the lookup and review the records returned.

The information available depends on the lookup and the version. Identify the record type before interpreting its value: an A or AAAA address doesn't do the same job as an MX record.

Interpret the result

Result What to check
An old IP appears The authoritative zone, and caching under the previous TTL
The record you're looking for doesn't appear The name queried, the type, and whether it exists in the right zone
The domain doesn't exist The spelling of the name, the domain registration and the delegation
Resolution failure or SERVFAIL The status of the authoritative servers and, if used, the DNSSEC chain

A lookup from cPanel shows what that server can resolve. It doesn't prove that every connection already sees the same result. Compare it with the propagation check.

Some installations also offer Trace Route to examine the network path. A hop that doesn't respond doesn't on its own prove the website is down: it may filter that kind of traffic.

If you need to correct a record, use Zone Editor at the authoritative provider. To find a specific email, open Track Delivery.
