Edit images in cPanel: size, thumbnails and format
cPanel's Images tool lets you change files that are already on your hosting. It is meant for one-off tasks: changing the dimensions of a photo, generating thumbnails or converting its format.
Before you start, save a copy of the originals. If the images belong to WordPress or another CMS, check how it uses them: changing files directly does not necessarily update their references or thumbnails in the application.
Which tool you need
| Your goal | Tool |
|---|---|
| Change the width or height of an image | Scaler. |
| Create small versions of the images in a folder | Thumbnailer. |
| Change the file type | Converter. |
| Reduce file size while keeping the dimensions | See Hostsuar's image optimisation. |
Open cPanel and look for Images under Files. If the file is still on your computer, upload it first with the File Manager.
Change the dimensions of an image
In Scaler, browse to the file and click it to scale it. Enter its new dimensions or a percentage and keep the aspect ratio so that it does not get distorted. Turn on the option to keep a copy of the old image, enter its path and apply the change.
For example, a 2400 × 1600 pixel photo can go down to 1200 × 800 while keeping its aspect ratio. Enlarging a small image does not bring back detail it does not have: if it looks blurry, use a higher-resolution original.
Create thumbnails
Thumbnailer works on a folder. Select the directory, enter the percentage and keep the aspect ratio. After generating the images, open the path cPanel shows to check the files created.
The tool does not insert those thumbnails into your website automatically: you have to use them in the HTML or from your CMS. Try first with a small folder that contains only the images you need.
Convert the format
In Converter, select a file or a folder, choose one of the formats offered and run the conversion. Check the output file before using it.
Changing the format does not guarantee a smaller file. Compare size and appearance; also check transparency if the image needs it. If the extension or the name changes, update the website's references to avoid broken images.
Before deleting the originals
Open the page where the image is used, check how it looks on mobile and desktop and make sure the new file is loaded. If the old one still appears, check the site's and the browser's caches.
If your goal is to improve the loading time of many photos, Hostsuar's image optimiser lets you work by domain or directory. Start with a small group and compare the result before widening the scope.
