Calendars and contacts in cPanel with CalDAV and CardDAV

Reviewed on 5 min read email setup calendars and contacts

CalDAV syncs calendars and CardDAV syncs address books. They are separate connections from IMAP: adding your email to an app does not automatically add your calendar.

Get your account's addresses

Log in to webmail and open Calendars and Contacts Configuration on the webmail tools page. If you go straight into Roundcube, go back to that page first.

Copy the username, the secure server URL and the direct addresses of the calendar and address book you want to use. The username is your full email address and the password is the mailbox password. The secure connection for this service uses port 2080; the paths may contain internal identifiers.

Do not build the URLs from examples or replace the hostname with your website's. If automatic discovery fails, use the alternative or direct address your account shows, as cPanel explains. These URLs are for the sync client, not pages to read in the browser.

iPhone and iPad

In Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts > Add Account > Other, choose Add CalDAV Account. For contacts, go to Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts and add a CardDAV account. In earlier versions, Calendar and Contacts appear directly in Settings.

Enter the server, username and password. If advanced options are shown, check SSL and port 2080, using the values from webmail. When a field asks for a URL, copy the full address; when it asks for server and port separately, keep them separate.

Mac

In System Settings > Internet Accounts, add a CalDAV or CardDAV account from the other account options. Use manual or advanced setup if discovery does not find your details. Enter the values from webmail and then select that calendar in Calendar or Contacts.

Thunderbird

For calendars, open the Calendar view and create one On the Network. Enter your username and the CalDAV location, find the available calendars and select the right one.

For contacts, open the Address Book and add a CardDAV address book with its location and credentials. Do not choose a local address book if you want changes to reach other devices.

Roundcube, Android and Outlook

To create new calendars or address books in current versions of cPanel, use Calendars and Contacts Management in cPanel or webmail. To share them, use Calendars and Contacts Sharing.

In Roundcube, the features available depend on the plugins installed. If Settings > CardDAV appears, check the linked address book and its update options. A local personal address book can be different from the CardDAV address book. Calendars also need the matching plugin; do not assume a universal interval, or that all changes only update manually.

On Android you need a client or adapter that supports CalDAV/CardDAV. cPanel documents the setup with DAVx5: add the account with the secure URL and the credentials, select the calendars and address books and check the sync permissions. In Outlook, check that your edition and any add-in are compatible before setting it up: having IMAP email does not mean these protocols are supported.

Check the sync

Create a test contact and event in the server's address book and calendar, sync and check that they appear on another device. Edit the test from that second device and check that the change comes back. Intervals depend on the app, its settings and battery restrictions.

If an event does not appear, check which calendar is selected, its visibility, time zone and permissions. If the connection fails, check the URL, port, username and password. A certificate warning means you need to check the hostname, not accept it without checking.

Deleting a synced contact or event may delete it on the other devices too. Keep an export before a clean-up or migration and avoid importing the same calendar repeatedly, because it can create duplicates.
