Domains and DNS
Connect a Hostsuar domain to Shopify
You can use a domain registered or managed at Hostsuar with Shopify without transferring its registration. The DNS configuration you need depends on what Shopify accepts for your domain; keep the records for any services that need to stay active.
Get the records Shopify asks for
In the Shopify admin, open Settings > Domains, choose to connect an existing domain and enter the full name. Shopify will show the DNS values it expects for the root domain and www.
Always check those values while you set things up, as Shopify may update them. Its official guide keeps the procedure for manually connecting an external domain.
Set up the domain at Hostsuar
First check where the public DNS zone is managed:
- If the domain uses the hosting account's DNS, open Zone Editor in cPanel.
- If the domain uses our zone tool without hosting, edit the records in DNS zone, on the domain's page in the client area. Its DNS assistant includes a "Move the website to Shopify" recipe: review the proposed changes and confirm them to apply them.
- If the nameservers belong to Cloudflare or another provider, make the changes there. Editing them in cPanel would have no public effect.
Then:
- Edit the root domain's A record with the address Shopify gives you.
- Create or edit the root domain's single AAAA record with the IPv6 address Shopify shows and delete any other AAAA records for the root domain.
- Set up
wwwas a CNAME pointing to the target Shopify shows. - Delete other A, AAAA or CNAME records competing for the root domain or
www. The root domain must keep a single A and a single AAAA record with the values Shopify shows at the time.
Don't delete MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC or verification records if email or other services need to keep working outside Shopify.
Verify the connection
Go back to Settings > Domains in Shopify and request verification. DNS changes can take several hours to propagate, and Shopify then needs to issue the SSL certificate.
Check separately:
- The domain with and without
www. - The SSL status in Shopify.
- Receiving and sending email for the domain.
- That the response really comes from Shopify. A redirect on the previous hosting only comes into play if visits still reach that server.
If Shopify still shows SSL as pending after 48 hours, check the CAA records its guide requires, that DNSSEC validates correctly and that there is no active Cloudflare proxy on those records. Don't delete a DS record just to test. If you need to disable DNSSEC, first delete the DS record at the registrar, wait for its TTL in the parent zone to expire and only then remove the signing at the DNS provider.
Connecting the domain doesn't move products, orders or content from another shop; it only sends visitors to the project set up in Shopify.
If Shopify rejects the connection
Its current guide also asks you to check the provider's nameservers. If the domain uses other DNS and Shopify flags this as a problem, confirm the requirement with Shopify before changing the delegation. Copy the whole zone you need first and coordinate DNSSEC; changing nameservers without preparing the destination can interrupt email.
If the notice says the domain belongs to another shop, follow Shopify's ownership verification. Changing records again and again won't release that association. Keep the previous values so you can go back to the old destination if the launch isn't ready.
