Choose the folder for an additional website in cPanel

When you add a domain in cPanel, you can share the main domain's files or assign it its own folder. For an independent website, choose its own folder and check the full path the panel shows.

Inside public_html

The main domain usually serves public_html. An additional website in public_html/tienda can also be reached as a path of the main domain and inherit rules from its .htaccess.

If you use this structure, test both ways in and review the redirect, maintenance and permission rules. Giving a folder a different name doesn't stop the main website from reaching it.

Outside public_html, where allowed

A folder at the same level avoids that accidental publication through a path of the main domain and the inheritance of rules from public_html. Whether it's available depends on cPanel's configuration and version; don't try to force a path the panel rejects.

For example, inside the account's home directory:

/home/usuario/public_html/ web principal
/home/usuario/webs/tienda/ web adicional, si se permite
/home/usuario/webs/blog/ otra web adicional

These paths are examples. The account root is its home directory, such as /home/usuario; it isn't the server's root /. Avoid using folders reserved for email, configuration or logs to publish a website.

Organisation and isolation

Websites in the same account still use its user and the permissions available. Separating them into folders doesn't isolate them from an intrusion. If you need separate access and limits for third-party projects, consider separate hosting accounts or a multi-account hosting plan.

To change an existing website, follow the guide to changing the path. Selecting another folder doesn't move its content or adapt the application.
