Fix the "Could not determine the database prefix" error when cloning with Softaculous

Reviewed on 4 min read softaculous clonado

When you try to clone an installation with Softaculous and "Could not determine the database prefix" appears, the message means Softaculous could not determine the table prefix of the source installation. On its own it does not identify the cause.

First check the installation record

Go to All Installations in Softaculous and open Edit installation details for the source installation. Check that the saved path matches the application's real directory and that the registered database details belong to that installation.

In WordPress, also check:

  • That wp-config.php is in the location the installation uses.
  • That $table_prefix is defined and matches the start of the existing tables.
  • That the database name and user belong to the current installation.
  • That the file can be read by the account user.

Do not change the permission to 777. Softaculous may protect wp-config.php with 0600, which still lets the owner read it.

If wp-config.php is one level above the WordPress directory, mention it when you ask for a review. Softaculous has linked that layout to this message in some cases; do not move the file temporarily without first checking how the installation loads its configuration.

Do not change the table prefix to try to get past the error. WordPress would no longer find the tables unless the change is made in a coordinated way in the configuration and in every table.

Check disk space only if there are signs of insufficient quota

Lack of space can also prevent cloning, but this message does not prove the quota is used up. Check the account's current usage in cPanel and compare it with the plan limit.

If you need to free up space, first identify what each directory or database takes up and which application uses it. Do not delete a database because you do not recognise its name, or a folder because it looks like an old copy. Before deleting content, confirm what it is for and keep a recoverable backup. See how to manage disk space usage.

For a one-off need you can request a temporary disk space increase, but a lasting solution is still needed if the account stays close to its limit.

Try cloning again

After fixing a detail you have checked, try cloning again just once. If it persists, ask for a review stating the application, the source path, the time of the attempt and the full message. Do not send database passwords.

Do not remove the installation from Softaculous or import it again as a routine step. Do it only if it has been confirmed that the record is wrong and cannot be fixed from Edit installation details, without selecting the deletion of files or database.

Review an incomplete cloning attempt

Check whether the attempt left files or a database at the destination before repeating it. Identify what belonged to that test and what was already there; do not overwrite a destination that has content without keeping a copy.

If the application gets its credentials or prefix from environment variables, external files or a custom loader, explain that structure to support. WordPress being able to resolve it does not guarantee the installer will interpret it the same way. After cloning, check that the copy uses its own database and does not run production payments, emails or tasks.
