Does server location affect search engine rankings?
The physical location of the server is usually a minor signal for geographic rankings. Choose your infrastructure for availability, compliance, latency and real proximity to your users, not because of a supposed obligation to host the website in the target country.
Search Console's old International Targeting tool has been retired and should no longer be part of a current strategy.
Current geographic signals
- A country-code domain or ccTLD, such as
.es, signals a clear country focus. - Language, currency, prices, addresses, phone numbers, shipping terms and genuinely local content help identify the audience.
- On multi-regional or multilingual sites, use separate URLs and correct, reciprocal
hreflangtags; do not redirect automatically based only on the visitor's IP. - Keep local business profiles and data consistent, use suitable structured data and earn relevant links or mentions from the target market.
- Use Search Console to verify properties, submit sitemaps and review indexing and performance, not for international targeting that no longer exists.
Performance and location
Distance can affect latency and, therefore, the experience and performance metrics. Measure from the regions where your users are, choose the available data centre with the best real connectivity and use a CDN and caching when your audience is spread out. The quality of network routes matters more than the distance in kilometres.
Choose with your project's data
Compare several measurements from your visitors' regions and tell server response apart from downloading images or JavaScript. A CDN can bring public resources closer, but the cart, the admin area or uncached queries may still depend on the origin.
Google's guide to multi-regional sites explains geographic targeting signals. A server location does not replace a version of the content that is useful to that audience, nor does it guarantee rankings.
If you change data centre without changing URLs, keep content, links and settings, and check DNS, certificates and availability during the move. You do not need to change domain to bring the infrastructure closer to your users.
