Turn on dark mode in Roundcube

Reviewed on 1 min read webmail roundcube

Roundcube's Elastic theme lets you switch between light and dark colours. It changes how webmail looks; it does not change your messages or the format your recipients receive.

Change the colour mode

  1. Sign in to Roundcube.
  2. Find Dark mode or Light mode in the main menu. In Elastic's desktop view it is in the left sidebar; on small screens it may be inside the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the option to switch. You can go back to the previous mode from the same control.

If it changes by itself or does not follow your system

When you have not made a manual choice, Elastic can follow your system's colour preference. When the interface opens, a manual choice saved in the browser takes priority. If your system switches colour scheme while Roundcube is open, some versions start following it again and reset that preference. That is why another browser, a private window or clearing the site data can give a different look.

An HTML email can keep the backgrounds and colours set by its sender; turning on dark mode does not guarantee that every image and message will look dark. If the contrast makes one hard to read, try light mode for a while.

If you want to change the whole layout or get the old Larry theme back, see what happened to the classic interface. Dark mode and changing the theme are separate settings.
