Domains and DNS

What can happen if you let an expired domain be released

Reviewed on 2 min read lapsed domains registration

A domain that is released can be registered by someone else. The former holder has no automatic priority to get it back, and a name with visits, links or commercial interest can be snapped up by automated registration systems.

Before waiting for it to become available

Check whether you can still renew or recover it with the current registrar. Compare the confirmed recovery cost with the risk of losing the name, the website, the email and the links that depend on it.

There is no reliable link between age, length or number of registered extensions and the resale price. Nor can the exact moment when a name becomes available be guaranteed.

What a backorder offers

A backorder service tries to register a domain when it is released. It does not renew or restore it while it is still assigned to the previous holder. There may be several competing requests, an auction or different conditions depending on the extension.

Before ordering one, check the extension coverage, the total cost, possible auctions and what happens if it does not get the domain. No service can guarantee that your attempt will beat everyone else's.

If someone else has already registered it

Do not enter old credentials on whatever website appears, and do not keep using that domain as a recovery email. Review the external accounts that depended on its addresses and change their contact details to a channel you control.

If you are going to negotiate a purchase or there is a dispute over prior rights, confirm the identity of the parties and the applicable procedure. Having been the holder before does not let you change someone else's registration from your old panel.

To avoid a repeat, keep the notifications, the person responsible for renewals and the payment method up to date for the domains you still need.
