Troubleshooting

New domain redirects to dominio.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi

Reviewed on 1 min read DNS domains

The /cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi page usually appears when the request reaches one of the server's IPs but the exact domain isn't associated with the expected site. On its own it doesn't prove that propagation is still pending.

  1. Check the response with and without www, over HTTP and HTTPS. Confirm whether there is an actual redirect to /cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi.
  2. Query the A and AAAA records on the authoritative DNS. Fix any old or mismatched IP.
  3. In cPanel > Domains, confirm that the exact hostname is added to the correct account.
  4. Check its DocumentRoot and that it contains the expected website.
  5. Wait for propagation only when the authoritative DNS is already correct and some resolvers still hold the old value. Clear the browser cache only if you have fixed a redirect that may have been cached.

If the DNS and the account are already correct

Don't treat visiting the IP as an equivalent test: on a shared server, the requested domain and the name sent during TLS decide which site is served. Check the domain's full URL, including the variant with or without www that fails.

Don't delete and re-create the domain without checking its configuration, email and document root. If the default page keeps appearing, send support the four HTTP/HTTPS tests with and without www, their responses and the resolved IPs, so the domain's association on the server can be reviewed.
