Resolve a website blocked by Google Safe Browsing

Reviewed on 2 min read Safe Browsing security

If the browser shows a dangerous site warning linked to Google Safe Browsing, check the domain's report before changing the website.

The warning may relate to malware, unwanted software or social engineering. On its own it does not show how the content got there, and you do not need to bypass it to diagnose or clean the account.

  1. Open Search Console > Security issues and note the category and the sample URLs. If you do not have access, check the Safe Browsing transparency report.
  2. Review the Search Console owners and users and remove any access you do not recognise.
  3. Keep evidence and examine files, the database, users, cron jobs and logs from cPanel, SSH or SFTP, without opening the compromised page in a normal browser.
  4. Clean the whole site and fix the entry point. The sample URLs are not necessarily all the affected ones.
  5. Check from a safe environment that malicious content is no longer being served and request a review in Search Console.

Google advises against continuing past the warning screen. If a specialist needs to inspect an affected URL, they should do so in an isolated environment, not from their usual computer or profile.

Request the review with useful information

Explain what content you removed, what vulnerability you fixed and how you checked that the site no longer serves it. Restoring a backup without closing the entry point can lead to a new infection. Also review third-party scripts and resources that the site includes.

The warning is not removed immediately, and hiding the URL from search results does not remove it. Follow the status in Google's security issues report; do not send repeated requests while the previous one is still pending.
