Troubleshooting

Chrome shows a controls icon instead of the HTTPS padlock

Reviewed on 2 min read https ssl

Chrome not showing a green padlock does not, on its own, mean there is a problem with your certificate. Since Chrome 117, the desktop version uses a controls icon next to the address to open the site information.

Check the connection

  1. Open the full URL of your domain over https://.
  2. Click the icon to the left of the address.
  3. Review the connection status and, if you need more detail, the certificate information.

If Chrome says Connection is secure, you do not need to install another certificate to get the old green icon back. The design and labels may vary between versions and devices.

HTTPS encrypts the communication and lets the browser verify the destination's certificate. It does not certify that the company is legitimate or that the application is free of vulnerabilities.

If a warning appears

Identify the message before you act:

What you see What to check
The URL uses HTTP Whether the site has valid HTTPS and a correctly configured redirect.
Certificate warning Domain name, expiry, chain of trust and the device's clock.
Images, styles or scripts are missing Possible mixed content, in Console and Network.
Dangerous or deceptive site The Safe Browsing warning; installing another certificate does not clean the site.

Hostsuar provides free SSL certificates, but issuing them requires the domains and their validation to be configured correctly. If you need help, give us the URL and the exact warning rather than just describing the colour of the icon.
