Set up email on Android with IMAP

Reviewed on 2 min read configuracion de correo android imap

On Android you can add your Hostsuar mailbox to any app that supports IMAP and SMTP, such as Gmail. Menu names vary with the app and its version; the server, username and password are those of your email account.

Prepare the account

First check that you can log in to webmail and copy the secure connection details. Use the full email address as the username. Do not use your Google account password or your client area password.

If you were already using POP and some messages are only on the phone, keep a copy before removing the account. POP and IMAP store email differently.

Add the mailbox

  1. In the app, open Add account. In Gmail, you get there from your profile picture and Add another account.
  2. Select Other and type the email address. If it asks for manual setup or an account type, choose Personal (IMAP) or IMAP.
  3. For the incoming server, enter the hostname given by cPanel, the full username and the password. Use 993 and SSL/TLS.
  4. For the outgoing server, enter the mailbox's SMTP details and turn on authentication. Use 465 with SSL/TLS, or the alternative 587 with STARTTLS if your configuration says so.
  5. Adjust the sync options and the name that will appear when you send.

The Google option is not the right one for a mailbox hosted here just because you use the Gmail app. Choose the provider according to where the account is hosted.

Check receiving and sending

Send a message to another of your own accounts and reply to it. Check that it reaches Android and webmail, and that sent messages are saved in the server's folder.

If the message appears when you open the app but you get no alerts, check the app's notification, sync and battery restriction settings. If it does not appear in webmail either, look into delivery to the mailbox before changing phone settings.

If you get a password error, check incoming and SMTP separately. If you get a certificate warning, use the exact hostname from the secure configuration; do not carry on accepting any certificate or turning off SSL/TLS.
