Websites and applications
Install Omeka S from Softaculous
Omeka S is a platform for publishing digital heritage collections and resources. It is available in the full Softaculous Apps Installer catalogue on our hosting plans and can be installed without uploading its files by hand or creating the database.
Do not confuse it with Omeka Classic: they are different applications, and their modules, themes and structure are not interchangeable. Choose Omeka S if the project is designed to work with several sites and linked resources.
Install Omeka S
- Log in to cPanel and open Softaculous Apps Installer. Do not go into WordPress Manager, which only manages WordPress installations.
- Use the application search and type
Omeka S. - Open its page and click Install.
- Select the HTTPS protocol and the domain where the project will run.
- If you want Omeka to open directly from the domain, leave the In Directory field empty. Type a folder, for example
colecciones, only if it should run atyourdomain.com/colecciones. - Set the site name, the admin username, a unique password and the admin email address.
- Review the advanced options and complete the installation.
When it finishes, Softaculous shows the public address and the admin URL. Save those details in a password manager.
The official page confirms that Omeka S is part of the Softaculous catalogue.
Before publishing the collection
- Enable HTTPS and check that the certificate covers the chosen domain.
- Set up cron jobs or additional modules only as described in the documentation for the installed version.
- Check the upload limit if you are going to work with large images, audio or documents.
- Schedule backups of files and database.
- Install only modules and themes compatible with your version of Omeka S.
Omeka S does not appear or the installation fails
Confirm that you are in the general Softaculous catalogue and not in another application's manager. If Omeka S does not appear, contact support so we can check its availability on the account.
If the installation fails, keep the full message and check the domain's PHP version, the available space and that the destination directory is empty. The specific message will help tell apart a requirements, permissions, space or configuration problem. The general Softaculous guide also explains how to find, install, clone and back up applications.
Check the first resource
Before importing a whole collection, create a test resource with a title, metadata and a small file. Check the thumbnail, the original file and its visibility on the public site; a resource created in the admin area is not necessarily published automatically.
Review the Omeka S requirements for the chosen version, including PHP extensions and thumbnail generation. If a particular file fails, note its format, size and error; do not raise every limit without distinguishing between upload, processing and permissions.
Also include the configuration and the collection files in your backups. A metadata export does not replace a restorable backup of the whole installation.
