Check your MySQL version and compatibility
The MySQL version belongs to the server's database service; it is not chosen per application like the PHP version. Check the actual version on your account before installing or upgrading a project, especially if it comes from another provider or uses a legacy compatibility connection.
Check the server version
In phpMyAdmin, look at the server information. You can also run this query from the connection your application uses:
SELECT VERSION() AS version_servidor;
The mysql --version command in a terminal shows the version of the installed client, which may differ from that of the server you connect to. To identify an application's environment, query the right server with its connection details.
Review the project's requirements
Checking the major version number is not enough. An application may depend on collations, SQL modes, functions, table engines or behaviour that changes between versions. Compare the requirements of the application and its connector with the result you get.
Test the installation or upgrade against a separate database and check reads, writes, searches and scheduled tasks. Do not force an incompatible installation by blindly removing the program's version check.
The vendor's support timeline separates maintained branches from those whose public updates have ended. That timeline does not on its own show which version your service runs or which upgrade is scheduled: if you are preparing a migration, confirm the available target with support.
What you can configure
On managed hosting, the version and global parameters are managed at server level. Some variables can be changed per session from the application; see which MySQL variables can be changed.
If an old installation depends on MySQL 5.7, review the terms of the legacy service and its migration. Keeping that temporary connection is no substitute for preparing a compatible, supported version of the application.
