Domains and DNS
How long a newly registered domain takes to work
When you register a new domain, it may not be available straight away. First the delegation and the authoritative zone must be published; then resolvers query that information and store it temporarily in their cache.
How long does a domain take to propagate?
There is no synchronised worldwide propagation and no universal time per extension. It depends on when the registry and the provider publish the delegation, on the zone answering correctly, and on how long resolvers keep earlier answers according to their TTL. As a result, different networks may show different results for a while.
For a .es domain, also check the Nic.es publication cycles. A registration or a nameserver change may wait for the next cycle before the caching stage begins.
During this period:
- The domain may not be reachable from some devices or networks.
- You may not be able to publish or view your website properly.
What to do while the domain propagates
- Check that the domain has been added correctly to your hosting service. You can do this from the Domains section in cPanel.
- Check the authoritative nameservers and query the record from more than one resolver before blaming a cache for the fault.
- Read the guide on managing and configuring domains and subdomains to make sure the domain is set up correctly.
If it still does not work
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The domain does not exist in DNS | Registration status, delegation and authoritative zone |
| It works from one network but not from another | DNS answers from both networks and their caches |
| It resolves to the right IP but shows another website | Domain added to the right account and publishing folder |
| The website opens but email does not arrive | MX records, mailboxes and email routing |
| An HTTPS warning appears | Certificate served for that name |
You can follow the DNS and IP check. Changing the nameservers repeatedly while you wait makes it harder to tell a cache from a configuration error.
When to contact support
Caches cannot be cleared globally. If the domain still does not resolve, contact support to review the registration status, the delegation and the authoritative zone rather than waiting indefinitely.
