Have several domains on a single WordPress installation
You can associate several domains with WordPress, but first decide what you want to achieve:
| Goal | Approach |
|---|---|
| Another domain leads to a page and the browser URL changes | Redirect to the destination |
| Manage a network of related sites | WordPress Multisite |
| Show a specific page while keeping another domain in the address bar | Mapping compatible with a single installation |
In Multisite the sites share the core and component management. They do not have the same isolation as independent installations, even though they have separate admin areas and content.
Prepare the domain
Set up the additional domain's DNS and add it in cPanel Domains with the same document root as WordPress. Sharing public_html is only correct if that is the installation's folder.
Issue a valid certificate for the new domain. Pointing to the same directory is not enough: WordPress may redirect to the primary domain if there is no compatible mapping integration.
Mapping a page on a single installation
The original article used Multiple Domain Mapping on Single Site. Its listing currently warns that it has not been tested with several recent major WordPress versions. Do not install it as an automatic recommendation: check its maintenance, compatibility and tests with your version.
On installations that already use it, the historical configuration is under Tools > Multidomain: it links the domain to the internal path of a page or content. Keep an inventory of those mappings before updating or replacing it.
For a new project, test a maintained solution that covers the theme and the features you need. Check both the destination page and the links it generates: not every plugin adapts manually written URLs or external integrations.
HTTPS, SEO and site features
Check images, forms, redirects, cookies and sessions on each domain. A form may depend on the origin, and a shop may have payment or cross-domain access restrictions.
Decide which URL should be indexed and check the canonical, sitemap and internal links. Publishing the same content on several domains does not automatically multiply its visibility. If you only need easy access to a page, a redirect can solve it without adding another presentation of the content.
Before turning off the mapping, check where visitors will end up and prepare equivalent redirects where appropriate. Keep the domains with traffic or links while you plan the transition.
