Hosting and cPanel

Network drive (Web Disk)

Reviewed on 1 min read webdisk archivos

Web Disk lets you work with your hosting files over WebDAV from a compatible client. It can be useful for accessing a shared folder without handing over the main cPanel password.

Prepare limited access

In cPanel > Web Disk, create an additional account with its own password, the directory it needs and Read-Only or Read-Write permissions. Note down the full username cPanel shows, including the domain.

The main account uses the cPanel credentials and reaches the whole account folder. Keep that access for administration; for someone else, select a specific folder.

Connect from your computer

Open Configure Client Access next to the account. Use the instructions for your operating system or WebDAV client and connect over HTTPS on port 2078, with a name covered by the service's certificate.

Check that you can see a test file. If you've given write access, also try uploading and deleting it inside that folder. If it fails, check the server name, certificate, port, full username and client compatibility.

Digest authentication and limits

The Digest Authentication option doesn't encrypt the files. Don't use it to replace an HTTPS connection or accept a certificate that doesn't belong to the server.

Web Disk isn't a backup or a system that resolves every simultaneous edit. Keep versions of important documents and check how your program behaves when several people open the same file. If your client doesn't support a compatible secure connection, use SFTP or FTPS.
