Detect and replace unmaintained WordPress plugins

Reviewed on 2 min read wordpress seguridad plugins

WordPress showing no pending updates does not mean all its components are still maintained. An abandoned plugin can stay on its last version even when security flaws or incompatibilities appear.

What to check for each component

In Plugins, open View details when available and check the official release page. Check all of the following together:

  • Date and content of the latest versions.
  • Declared compatibility with WordPress and PHP.
  • Support activity and response to security issues.
  • Where the package comes from and who publishes its updates.
  • Notices affecting the installed version.

There is no fixed period that proves a plugin is abandoned. "Not tested with your version" does not prove a vulnerability either. A commercial or private plugin may be updated outside WordPress.org; check its licence and distribution channel before concluding it is not maintained.

Decide what to do

If you do not need it, prepare its removal and check whether it stores data, generates shortcodes or leaves tasks behind. Being deactivated does not remove its files from the server.

If you need it and confirm it receives no fixes, look for a maintained alternative or fork. Test the replacement in staging: forms, content, payments, tasks and historical data may depend on it. Do not remove the plugin first if its uninstaller could delete information you need to migrate.

Keep a backup of files and database and record what you are replacing and why. If there is an active vulnerability, limit the exposed feature while you prepare the fix; do not wait indefinitely for an update with nobody responsible for it.

Review it regularly

Keep a short inventory of components, their purpose, who is responsible and the update channel. Also check inactive themes and private extensions. Age helps you prioritise this review, but on its own it does not let you attribute an incident.

If there are already unauthorised changes, follow the WordPress clean-up: replacing the suspicious plugin does not prove all persistence has been removed.
