Increase the upload limit in All-in-One WP Migration

Reviewed on 3 min read wordpress migraciones

When you need to import a large backup with All-in-One WP Migration, you may run into an upload limit. The effective limit can depend on PHP, the web server and the edition or import method you are using. Check the specific warning in your installation before changing resources: a restriction imposed by an extension or licence is not solved by increasing PHP limits.

Check the limit and the space available

In All-in-One WP Migration > Import, check the maximum size shown and compare it with the .wpress file. Also make sure the account has enough space to store the package and extract its contents: raising the PHP limit does not increase your hosting space.

Adjust the PHP options from cPanel

Log in to cPanel, open Select PHP Version and go to Options. As a minimum, adjust:

  • upload_max_filesize, with a value equal to or greater than the file size.
  • post_max_size, with a value greater than upload_max_filesize.
  • memory_limit, if a memory error appears, without exceeding the plan's resources. Execution memory does not need to match the package size.
  • max_execution_time and max_input_time, only if the import fails because of time.

Changes are saved automatically. Go back to the importer and confirm that the effective limit has changed before starting the restore.

Do not add php_value directives to .htaccess as a general fix: whether they work depends on the PHP handler, and an unsupported directive can cause a 500 error. Do not set values such as 10 GB or 1 GB by default either, because the server may impose lower limits.

If the limit does not change or the import fails

Check that you have changed the PHP version that domain uses. If the upload returns a 413 error or stops before reaching WordPress, another server limit may be involved. If the file finishes uploading and the restore fails, keep the error: raising the maximum upload size does not fix a damaged package, lack of space or an incompatibility.

See ServMask's guide on the upload limit to compare how your version behaves. Do not modify the plugin's code or install unofficial extensions to get round restrictions.

Before importing: importing a backup replaces the database, media, plugins and themes of the destination WordPress. First create a recoverable backup, stop writes and check the website when it finishes. If the server still limits the upload, use an import method the plugin supports or ask support instead of continuing to raise resources blindly.
